“Un feu courant sous la peau”: les métaphores poétiques dans les romans

International audienceWhile several academics have studied the relations between the Greek novel, epics and classical theater, very few have been interested in the relations between the novel and lyric poetry. Erwin Rohde’s main thesis may have dissuaded this kind of study, which is difficult, since even if the hexametric citations are recognized easily enough in the novelistic prose, the lyric meters are generally not cited explicitly: we prefer to talk about allusions. Mythological paradigms are first studied in Daphnis and Chloe and Leukippe and Cleitophon; they are linked to poetic traditions for which we do not possess clear independent records. I address thereafter several metaphorical fields certainly borrowed from lyric poetry, insisting on the fact that the attested poetical texts are not necessarily formally earlier than the novels. We start with the metaphorical fields of athletic feats and fighting in war, of the sting of love, and of piracy and robbery; we then examine the much more uncommon metaphor of the magnetic stone and magnetism. This motif may come from the Tragic poets and Plato, and occurs in the poems of the Palatine Anthology. In the “Symphony of Texts” played by the novels, Sappho’s,Alcaeus’, Anacreon’s and Hellenistic poems must have held an important role that might be explained by erotic themes unknown in the epics.Alors qu’existent de nombreuses recherches sur les relations entre roman grec, épopée et théâtre classique, on en connaît peu sur le roman et la poésie lyrique. La thèse centrale d’Erwin Rohde a pu nuire à ce type d’étude. Si les citations d’hexamètres se reconnaissent assez bien dans la prose romanesque, les vers lyriques ne sont en général pas cités explicitement : nous préférons parler d’allusions. J’étudie d’abord les paradigmes mythologiques liés à des traditions poétiques dont nous n’avons pas forcément de traces indépendantes, dans Daphnis et Chloé puis dans Leucippé et Clitophon ; puis des champs métaphoriques certainement empruntés à la poésie lyrique, en insistant sur le fait que les textes poétiques attestés ne sont pas toujours antérieurs formellement aux textes romanesques. En partant des exploits athlétiques et du combat guerrier, de la piqûre d’amour, de la piraterie et du brigandage, on ira vers la métaphore plus rare de la pierre d’aimant et du magnétisme, qui peut provenir des Tragiques et de Platon : on en trouve des exemples dans l’Anthologie Palatine.
